One aspect of slavery that is still downplayed is the use of slaves as sexual objects. I do not know if such were the case with Polk, but a pediphile would have been likely to purchase young slaves to fulfill his sexual desires. The fact that slaves were often paraded naked at auction and that good looking slaves brought high prices speaks to their sexual use. And, of course, the Southern brothels were well known bidders in these auctions.
